SEO New Year’s Aftermath

12.02.09

SEO AftermathOne of the many problems of SEO is that we have created a system to deceive others that is SO effective we can use it to deceive ourselves.  It’s only a matter of finding charts and small amounts of info to make us believe everything is going smoothly.

But it’s just fair to ask if your SEO campaign met your expectations.  You probably experienced more sales but, did you get them from your target?  Were these as many as you wanted them to be?  How much of your success was serendipity and how much of it was a direct result of your efforts?

Charts can give you insight, but you have to be willing to accept the facts.  Don’t use them to deceive yourself.  Or anyone else, in that order of ideas.

It’s time to get critical.

How to evaluate yourself?

First of all, take a deep breath.  This is not about being harsh on yourself.  Self-pity is just one of many ways we humans have to lose perspective.  So maybe things didn’t go as well as you expected and you find yourself running with a pair of scissors to cut every possible corner.  “Everyone’s got to go, everything must be erased and we’ll go on hiatus until we find THAT idea, the one that will deep-fry us in money batter”.

It’s worse thing than not having a business is to have a static business.  Instead of bringing your company to a grinding halt, take a deep breath (seriously.  Do it.  Now).  Once you have some oxygen massaging your brain cells, take a seat and try to answer these questions as honestly as possible:

SEO Checklist (copy and print)

  • Did you use the right keywords to promote your products and services?
  • Did you consciously evaluate every link to make sure that these were quality links
  • Is your web page’s home page properly optimized with keywords on its HTML attributes, contents and graphics HTML tags?
  • Do you have a blog that serves to your positioning strategy?
  • Are you constantly taking note of the keywords and strategies used to promote their products?
  • Do you have an off-site SEO strategy? (link building, indexation on directories… you know the drill)
  • Do you know what MetaCrawler is? (if not, check this out)

The Aftermath

In a perfect world, everyone would have a chance to rank first on Google.  The Warhol utopia made true: fifteen minutes of fame.  Sadly, SEO is a marketing strategy that requires lots of effort, research and constant updates.  The more complex search engines get, the more we have to learn about them.

Did you get the results that you wanted?  We can help you surpass them next year.
