SEO: Are we paying extra for good practices?

01.13.10

So SEO experts are charging tons for what it can be considered nothing but good practices.  That’s like having a restaurant that charges more because their employees wash their hands.

Sometimes it’s better not to know what’s going on.  I hope you’re not eating as you read this but:  probably the person who made that sandwich didn’t wash hands at all.

Maybe that person is you.  See what’s going on here?  Not everyone takes care of those details.

I hope (and in some way I believe) that there is a lot more to SEO than keywords and link building.

Charging extra for doing things… properly?

Come to think about it, SEO (in a white-hat context) is nothing but the reinforcement of good Internet practices.  Almost anyone who has a bit of patience and tons of time can create a web site.  The problems start when you have no clue on how to do it properly.  There are millions and millions of ways to create a web site.  So who are we to say which one is the right one?

I don’t know, but the whole situation makes me think of those sitcom suburban dads that would spend their entire weekends building up a drawer or fixing the dishwasher.  It becomes a matter of waiting and watching closely.

… and comedy ensues!

The joke stops being funny after a while.

So you have invested a certain amount of cash on a web page that is not bringing you customers.  You keep paying for pointless upgrades, changes, web hosting plus a basic optimization package… what for?  Is this some kind of a joke?

Sometimes we trust on search engines blindly.  Never forget that a website:

  • Should be attractive and memorable
  • Must have a clear call to action for your visitors to follow
  • Must have outstanding navigability
  • Should work as an automated sales agent.

If you’re not getting all of these benefits from your SEO strategy, then you have to go back to the drawing board and demand nothing but the best web site you can get.

SEO might be charging for doing things properly.  Then again, how many people can do things as they should be?
