Seven Deadly Sins of Professional Web Design

professional web designWebsite design is easier nowadays.  Tools are more affordable and easier to implement and it’s possible to get professional looking websites fast.  Now… the kind of results your company wants to get by designing a website are a completely different subject.

Do you want to scare your customers and prospects away with a sinful web page design or do you want to have a profitable online presence that transforms browsing into real conversions?  There are some web design mistakes that cannot be forgiven.  They will cost you money and credibility. Even when it comes to a professional web design for a small business, you can’t be observant enough.

You can still repent, but you have to know the evils that lurk when a company designs a website.

The proper use of technology separated the professional web designer from the wannabes and the bar was raised a few notches and the bar was raised so high above our heads that it became a business.  Website designing stopped being a geeky hobby (not different from collecting stamps) to become a new form of business.

Sadly, some people who don’t want to be part of it were dragged in.  They have the knowledge, but they just don’t care about their customers and it shows.  Lousy, ugly, hard-to-browse online content full of annoying details.

Would you manage your store like that?  Would you let the people that work for you mistreat your customers?  Or how about letting garbage pile in front of your door?

Here is a list of seven deadly sins of Web Designing.  Reflect, repent from the bottom of your heart and rejoice!  You will be granted results as soon as you leave your older-self behind!

1.  Lust  (irrelevant content on your web site)

It’s been said in this blog before:  Having a sexy girl on a bikini won’t necessarily sell your product unless you’re selling bikinis.  If you make your prospects and customers follow a series of red herrings, they will feel betrayed and your credibility will drop down to the floor.  Malware-ads have used these tools to fool naive customers into credibility and people are not exactly eager to click on pop-ups.  So, are you looking for a cheap thrill or for real commitment?

2.  Gluttony (link farming)

We all hate the guy that drops names every time.  Why would the design of our websites be like that guy?  Putting a handful of links in your mouth is not only unhealthy, but can get your search rankings penalized.  Plus, it will go straight to your hips…

3.  Greed (stingy web design)

… sure, why don’t you just put a HUGE chunk of information in .txt format and let the viewer figure out how your product looks on ASCII art?  It’s cheap, right?  Who needs web designers when you can get away with something like that?  While you’re still at it, why don’t you just make a poster with a piece of cardboard and markers instead?  Having the tools and the expertise we have nowadays, it is sacrilege to have crummy websites.

4.  Sloth  (ignoring optimizations)

Read all the contents of your site at least a billion times.  Go home.  Repeat.  You have to constantly update, change, optimize and proofread your contents.  Both customers and search engines can’t forgive certain mistakes and overlooking the importance of these details can cost you a pretty penny, credibility and the attention of search engines.

5.  Wrath (attacking your customers with pop-ups)

Get this in your head:  NO ONE LIKES POP-UPS! They detract from a site’s usability, they are annoying and usually they are either full of malware or have anything important for your customer.

6.  Envy (copying other people’s work)

There is one huge difference between re-inventing the wheel and stealing your competitors’ wheels so you can change tires.  Stealing other people’s web designs is not a professional attitude and it is undeniable proof of shameless incompetence.  Why to steal a concept when you can do something better?

7.  Pride (paying no heed to these suggestions)

In order to solve a problem, you have to admit you have a problem.  So you have your lurid, hefty, greedy, lazy, angry, petty site… and surprisingly enough, no one is visiting you.  You’re spending heavy cash trying to keep your website afloat.  If it is not working for you, you have to clean up yopr act.

You have been enlightened.  Go home now and be merry.
